EquaGel Adjustable Protector
Wheelchair Cushion

Customised Pressure Therapy

The EquaGel Adjustable Protector Cushion is the ultimate cushioning solution for wound care.

This cushion has a pelvic contour for better weight distribution and positioning that can be adjusted for its depth.

Included are two different pelvic contour inserts that can increase the amount of therapeutic gel under the pelvis from 1 3/4″ to 2″, 2 1/4″, or 2 1/2″ deep to assist the user in positioning within the wheelchair. The gel contour inserts are slipped into the fabric pocket inside the cover, beneath the gel.

Wound care nurses, and other professionals in long term care facilities like the ability to adjust the contour and not have to continually monitor it as is the case with air cushions.

The EquaGel Adjustable Protector Cushion is 100% EquaGel configured in two-stages.

  • 1st Stage (Upper surface) has thin walls and a tight grid for comfort
  • 2nd Stage (Bottom) is has thicker walls and a wide grid for deep posture support

Nursing facilities and other long term care facilities endorse the EquaGel Adjustable Protector Cushion for preventing pressure ulcers, as well as wound healing assistance that is not provided by any other cushioning technology.

Pressure
Mapping Testing

A side-by-side comparison of the average pressure mapping readings of the same user demonstrates a pattern of excellence in EquaGel cushions. Even comparing the non-adjustable EquaGel cushions to a premium brand adjustable air cushion, properly adjusted, demonstrates superior performance: as much as 12.4% lower average pressure, 14.3% lower peak pressure, and up to 5.3% greater weight distribution area.

It should be noted that these results hold generally true with a majority of user body types according to tests, but EquaGel do not claim these results to be guaranteed for any particular user or potential user. A trained professional should analyse the needs of pressure-sensitive users on an individual basis and discover the correct cushion to use in each individual case.

FAQ
Q

What is Column Buckling Technology?

A

Simply put, column buckling refers to the way EquaGel behaves under weight.

Each wall of gel is capable of supporting only a light load. When that threshold is exceeded, the wall of gel buckles into the hollow area between walls and passes the weight to the surrounding walls for support. This “buckling and weight-passing” happens instantly and repeatedly until the maximum surface area of pressing weight is evenly supported by largely equalised pressure.

The peak pressure points of the ischial tuberosities and the coccyx/sacrum buckle into the EquaGel feeling almost as if they are free floating within the cushion while the thighs and buttock of the user are supported.

My experience with the EquaGel cushions is limited to only two clients, however both were positive.  One elderly gentleman was very uncomfortable in his wheelchair, and experienced significant relief of discomfort with the General cushion model.  My second client, a developmentally disabled young woman in a wheelchair fulltime, has been using the Basic cushion for about 6 months without any discomfort or pressure sores (she had a history of skin redness, but needed something thin to allow stand pivot transfers).

The materials in this cushion are very unique – there is nothing quite like it on the market.  I do think it has the potential to provide good pressure distribution as well as postural stability (two things which are hard to get together in one cushion).
