We recently caught up with 14-year-old Alyssa and her Dad, David, who told us that their family had just got back from a 5-week holiday to Thailand, where Alyssa’s Duro Stroller had proved to be invaluable! You may remember a 10-year-old Alyssa from one of our previous blog posts, where her family invited the team to spend some time at Waikato Equitherapy, one of Alyssa’s favourite places. Alyssa still loves pony riding to this day!
Alyssa was diagnosed at age 5 with Rett Syndrome, a neurological disorder, that mostly affects females – about 1 in 12,000. The symptoms of Rett syndrome are similar to those of autism and cerebral palsy and it can be misdiagnosed as those disorders. David describes Alyssa as an amazing girl who is giggly, laughs a lot and is happy every day.
Whilst girls and women affected by Rett syndrome may have difficulty communicating verbally and physically, it is important to realise that they experience a full range of emotions and understand more than they can express. They have engaging personalities and will enjoy taking part in social, educational and recreational activities at home and in the community.
