Top 4 Reasons to Choose a Vehicle Harness

1. Supports safe travel

For many families, travelling in the car with a child who is at risk of unbuckling, wriggling free, or climbing out of their seat can be stressful and frightening. Safe transport isn’t just about having a car seat or fastening your seatbelt; it’s also about ensuring the person stays secure for the entire journey.

Many vehicle harnesses have unique features that make it difficult for the user to exit the vehicle seat during travel. For example, vehicle harnesses may offer buckles that are difficult to undo independently or require a tool to release the buckle mechanism.

The Safe2Go Harness offers an Anti-Escape buckle.

Additionally, it is imperative that the selected vehicle harness is able to work in conjunction with the vehicle safety systems. The Safe2Go Harness has been crash tested to ensure its design supports the operation of the vehicle seat belt and other vehicle safety systems, which protect the user in the event of a motor vehicle accident.

The Safe2Go Harness has been crash tested to meet Australian Standard AS 5384: Accessories for seat belts used in motor vehicles.

2. Creates a sense of security and calm through developing a travel routine.

For some children and adults, having clear physical boundaries provides comfort. A key component of the Safe2Go Harness is its vest with adjustable Velcro straps. Adjusting these straps to the user’s preference can create a calming, deep-pressure effect.

The Safe2Go vest can be fitted to the user before entering the vehicle (pre-fit mode) or after entering the vehicle when first installed on the vehicle seat (in vehicle mode). Having these two options allows you to tailor the travel routine and procedure to the user’s individual needs. For example, pre-fit mode provides users with the opportunity to regulate themselves outside the vehicle when wearing the vest before continuing with the installation process. This can be particularly helpful for users who benefit from having time to transition between task steps.

The Safe2Go Harness can be fitted outside of the vehicle, helping to establish a sense of security and a travel routine.

3. Reduces driver distraction

Some users may attempt to undo their seatbelt, climb out of their seat, or physically try to get the attention of the driver while the vehicle is moving. Even small moments of distraction can significantly increase the risk of sudden braking or an accident, which can have life-threatening implications for the user, driver, other passengers, and road users.

The Safe2Go Harness design firmly secures the user at the shoulders and pelvis. This limits the user’s available upper body range of motion, which could otherwise be used to wriggle out of other vehicle harnesses and contribute to driver distraction.

The Safe2Go Harness can keep the user securely positioned in the seat, ensuring a safe journey for all.

4. Provides postural support

Vehicle harnesses can address the postural support needs of older children and adults who require postural support when travelling in a vehicle. The webbing of vehicle harnesses is firmly tightened during installation and fitment, providing support to the user’s body.

The design of the Safe2Go Harness has incorporated the research from wheelchair seating and postural care. Research tells us that when the user’s pelvis is well supported and stabilised, their overall trunk control and positioning improve. In the Safe2Go Harness, this is achieved through a singular webbing channel that is fed from the shoulders to the pelvis, meaning that when the shoulder straps are tightened, this also increases the amount of support provided across the user’s pelvis. This, in conjunction with the cross strap on the Safe2Go Harness, prevents the user from sliding down the vehicle seat and ensures their trunk is positioned correctly relative to the vehicle’s seat belt and airbags.

Conclusion

A well-chosen vehicle harness can make everyday travel safer, calmer, and more manageable for everyone. Whether it’s helping a person stay securely seated, supporting a predictable travel routine, reducing distractions for the driver, or providing essential postural support, the right harness can transform challenging journeys into more positive experiences. The Safe2Go Vehicle Harness has been thoughtfully designed with these needs in mind, combining safety, comfort, and practical usability to support families and caregivers on every journey.

The Power of Giving Back: Creating Possibility Together

Living a Life of Contribution

Giving back has always been part of who I am. It shapes how I live, how I compete, and how I connect with people. It has never been just about helping others, but about building a sense of community and leaving things better than I found them, something that aligns closely with Medifab’s commitment to helping people live with confidence, comfort, and independence.

Over the past few years, I’ve found meaning in leadership and advocacy. I serve as Deputy Chair of the national I.Lead Committee and also on the Auckland I.Lead Committee, both focused on strengthening youth voice and representation. I’m also part of the Halberg Youth Council, the Health NZ Regional Consumer Council, and the Auckland Transport Capital Projects Accessibility Group. Each space is different, but they all share one goal: ensuring decisions that affect disabled people are made with them, not for them.

For me, contribution isn’t limited to one space. Whether I’m racing internationally, speaking to students, or working alongside others in these leadership roles, I always come back to one question: how can this make a difference for someone else? That question is what keeps me grounded. I try to use my experiences and my voice to open doors that might otherwise stay closed.

Championing Inclusion On and Off the Track

Earlier this month, I was honoured to receive Volunteer of the Year at the Disability Sport Auckland Awards for my work with the athletics programme. It was a humbling moment, not for the award itself, but for what it represented, the quiet effort of so many people who give their time without expecting anything in return. Most of the real work happens behind the scenes, in those early mornings, late nights, and unseen moments that make inclusion possible.

When my name was called, I thought about the athletes who show up each week ready to train, the volunteers who give their time, and the families who support them. Awards like that don’t belong to one person; they belong to everyone who shows up and makes inclusion possible. It reminded me that the real measure of giving back lies in consistency, care, and presence, the effort that lasts long after the applause fades.

Another highlight recently has been contributing to research that takes a closer look at inclusion in sport. I recently co-authored a paper titled Articulations of Ableism in Sport and Physical Activity, published in The Journal of Sport & Social Issues. The study explores how ableism operates across sport and recreation in Aotearoa New Zealand, often in subtle ways that shape who gets seen, supported, and valued.

Being part of that project meant bringing lived experience into academic work, bridging what happens in everyday sport with how systems and attitudes are built. It was an opportunity to help create a clearer language for understanding the barriers disabled people face, and for challenging them. For me, that is another form of giving back, helping to create change not only on the track but within the structures that define opportunity itself.

Creating Possibility Together

I’ve always believed that everyone has something to give, whether it is time, perspective, or experience. Living with a disability has shown me both the barriers and the breakthroughs that come with inclusion. I know what it feels like to be overlooked, but I also know what it means when someone chooses to make space. That is what drives me to give back, making sure others feel seen, capable, and part of something bigger than themselves.

Through these experiences, I’ve learned that leadership means listening, learning, and allowing others to lead too. Inclusion doesn’t happen by chance. It is built through intention, through the way we plan, communicate, and work together. Every time someone chooses to contribute, they help build a culture where people feel they belong.

Giving back has also taught me that growth works both ways. When you give your time and energy to something bigger than yourself, you gain perspective and purpose.

What I love most about giving back is how it spreads. When people see others contributing, it encourages them to do the same. Change rarely happens all at once; it begins with one act, idea, or person deciding to make a difference. I see this every day in the communities I’m part of, from Disability Sport Auckland to I.Lead and the Halberg Youth Council. It always starts small, and then it grows.

For me, giving back means using what I have to help others find freedom, confidence, and possibility, just as Medifab does every day through their work and innovation.

Whether it is volunteering, mentoring, joining a committee, or simply checking in on someone, giving back changes everything. It builds connection, strengthens resilience, and reminds us that when we lift others, we rise too. Because in the end, the greatest thing we can offer isn’t our time or our talent, but our commitment to others.

As I gear up for my upcoming international wheelchair racing season, I can’t help but reflect on the incredible opportunities that come with travelling the world as both an athlete and a wheelchair user.

As I gear up for my upcoming international wheelchair racing season, I can’t help but reflect on the incredible opportunities that come with travelling the world as both an athlete and a wheelchair user.

This season, I’m fortunate to travel to destinations like Australia, the UAE, and Switzerland to compete, and each trip brings unique challenges and rewards. While preparing to navigate airports, accommodations, and accessibility in different countries, I’ve learned valuable lessons that I want to share, not just for athletes like me but for anyone travelling internationally as a wheelchair user.

1. Notify the Airline

Travelling as an athlete with a racing wheelchair requires specific considerations. Racing wheelchairs are large, fragile, and uniquely designed, so ensuring they arrive safely at your destination is a top priority. This starts with notifying the airline well in advance and checking their policies for oversized or specialised equipment. Packaging tools, spare parts, and protective covers are also essential to safeguard the chair during transit. But as any wheelchair user knows, managing personal mobility and ensuring your day-to-day wheelchair arrives intact is just as important, if not more so.

2. Plan Ahead

For wheelchair users in general, the most crucial step is to plan ahead. Research your destination to understand the accessibility landscape, including accommodation, transport options, and attractions. Look for hotels with features like step-free entrances, elevators, and roll-in showers. Don’t hesitate to call ahead to confirm accessibility, as what’s advertised isn’t always accurate. Similarly, learn about local transport systems. Some cities have excellent, accessible public transport, while others might require you to rely on taxis or rental vehicles equipped with ramps.

3. Arrive Early

Air travel can be one of the most challenging aspects of international travel. Arriving early at the airport is critical, especially when navigating security checks. For wheelchair users, this process often involves additional inspections of your chair or assistive devices. It’s vital to advocate for yourself during these interactions. Politely but firmly ensure the security team speaks to you directly, rather than your caregiver or companion. Statements like, “Please address me with any questions,” can set the tone and establish your independence. Carrying documentation for medical devices or equipment can also help streamline the process.

4. Pack Strategically

Packing strategically is essential for all travellers but especially important for wheelchair users. Keep vital items like medications in your carry-on luggage. If you rely on specific equipment like a cushion or portable charger, pack duplicates to avoid issues if your luggage is delayed. A well-stocked repair kit can also be a lifesaver in case of unexpected issues with your wheelchair.

5. Be Flexible

Once you’ve arrived at your destination, flexibility becomes your best ally. Despite all the preparation, unexpected challenges can arise: elevators may be out of service, cobblestones might test your patience, or accessible taxis might be unavailable. These moments require patience, creativity, and sometimes asking for assistance. Many locals are willing to help, and connecting with disability advocacy groups or online communities can provide invaluable tips for navigating your destination.

While travelling as a wheelchair user requires extra effort, the rewards make it worthwhile.

“Every journey is an opportunity to see the world, meet new people, and experience different cultures.”

For me, it’s not just about the competition, it’s about the memories made along the way, from navigating bustling airports to exploring vibrant cities. Whether you’re travelling for a race or simply for adventure, the key is preparation, advocacy, and a willingness to embrace the unexpected.

Travelling can feel overwhelming, but with the right mindset and tools, it becomes an empowering experience. As I head into my next season, I’m reminded of the possibilities waiting beyond each challenge. Wherever your travels take you, let them be filled with discovery, growth, and the joy of knowing you’re capable of navigating the world on your terms.

Children With Disabilities Now Included in AU/NZ Child Restraint Standard

Australia and New Zealand’s child restraint Standard (AS/NZS 1754: 2024 – Child restraint systems for use in motor vehicles) has recently been updated. The update includes the addition of a new section to allow for tested variations to compliant child restraints to better suit the needs of children with a disability.

Australia and New Zealand’s child restraint Standard (AS/NZS 1754: 2024 – Child restraint systems for use in motor vehicles) has recently been updated. The update includes the addition of a new section to allow for tested variations to compliant child restraints to better suit the needs of children with a disability.

Why is this important?

Previous versions of the Australian/New Zealand child restraint Standard have not included children with a disability or medical condition. Consequently, product development for off-the-shelf, compliant child restraints has been restricted in its ability to cater for the needs of children with a disability or medical condition.

This has contributed to the practice of health professionals modifying compliant child restraints to suit the needs of children with a disability or medical condition to address their unmet needs within compliant restraints. Modification of compliant child restraints has the potential to increase risk of injury or harm for the occupant.

As modifications are untested additions, they can alter the compliance of the child restraint and may fundamentally alter its safety performance in a motor vehicle accident. In comparison, a restraint that complies with AS/NZS 1754: 2024 meets safety performance criteria set out in the Standard.

What changes to child restraints in the mainstream market can be expected due to this change?

It is anticipated that the inclusion of children with a disability or medical condition to the Australian/New Zealand child restraint standard could result in:

Increased opportunities for innovative product development. This could include complaint child restraints having the scope within their design to be adapted to suit some disability or medical related needs. As this possibility may be part of the design for future compliant child restraints, this means any adaptation possibilities can be tested against the Standard allowing the child restraint to remain compliant with the Standard.

Developments in research and the evidence base, ultimately contributing to new learnings and developments in child restraint research.

What does this mean if my child/client is currently using a special-purpose child restraint?

It is important to highlight even with the inclusion of children with disabilities and medical conditions into the updated Australian New Zealand Standard, there will be still some children who require the use of a special-purpose child restraint to access safe transportation.

This is because the scope of the revised Standard is narrow and defined, meaning not all individual needs will be addressed through child restraints that will be designed to meet the updated Standard. Additionally, the processes required to design and test child restraints against the updated Standard is a detailed and extensive process. Given this, there will be need for some individuals to continue using their existing special purpose child restraint until more information is available about new child restraints that have been designed to meet the updated Standard. For example, it is not yet known what design features will exist in child restraints designed to meet the updated that cater to the needs of children with disabilities or medical conditions.

Getting involved in parasport can transform your life. It’s not just about physical abilities, it’s about discovering your strengths, building self-confidence, and becoming part of a community that supports you every step of the way. For me, parasport was never solely about competition. It became a way to redefine my potential, break through challenges, and find a place where I felt I truly belonged. If you’re curious about how to get started, I’d like to share my journey and what parasport can offer.

My path wasn’t without obstacles. I was born with Spina Bifida, and over the years, I’ve undergone more than 30 surgeries. But despite the challenges, I was determined to live an active life. From a young age, I pushed beyond the limits that others thought I had. I wasn’t going to let my physical condition stop me from exploring the opportunities that sports could provide.

Over the years, I’ve tried a range of sports. I’ve played wheelchair basketball, done handcycling, wheelchair turbo touch, and even triathlons. For a few years, I was also a competitive swimmer. But in 2019, I shifted my focus to wheelchair racing. It wasn’t about trying to be the best from the start, I just wanted to see where it could take me. As I grew more committed, my passion for the sport deepened, and my determination to improve increased. Like many young athletes, having the right support and environment made a huge difference in my progress.

Physically disabled and vision impaired athletes during on Day 2 of the Halberg Games 2023 at Kings College, Auckland, New Zealand on Friday 15 April 2023.
Connecting with Local Programmes and Organisations

If you’re thinking about getting involved in parasport, my biggest recommendation is to connect with local programmes. For me, Disability Sport Auckland has been incredibly helpful. These local clubs offer not just training but also a supportive space where you can learn new skills and get advice from people who understand what you’re going through. Now that I’m a coach at Disability Sport Auckland, I see firsthand how these programmes help young people unlock their potential. It’s more than just training—it’s about being part of a community that believes in your abilities.

A major part of my journey has also been working with organisations like Paralympics New Zealand. Their ‘Seeing is Believing’ programme gave me the chance to visit schools and share my story, helping young people realise the possibilities within parasport.

Programmes like these aim to inspire the next generation, showing that if you believe in yourself and take that first step, the possibilities are endless.

The Halberg Foundation has also played a significant role in helping young athletes with disabilities get involved in sports. They provide essential resources and guidance, opening doors for people who may not have otherwise had the opportunity to participate. Their commitment to inclusivity in sport has been instrumental in helping athletes like me grow and
succeed. Organisations like Halberg make a big difference when it comes to access and support.

Taking The First Step

I understand how overwhelming it can feel to start something new. You might be wondering, “Where do I even begin?” or “Which sport is right for me?” I’ve been there too. But if I’ve learned anything, it’s that you need to just dive in. Try different sports, reach out to organisations, and find something that excites you. Whether it’s wheelchair racing, basketball, swimming, or something else, there’s a sport out there that fits you. The most important thing is taking that first step.

Parasport has been a huge part of my personal development.

"It’s not just about breaking records or winning races—it’s about growth. Through parasport, I’ve gained confidence, built resilience, and discovered my purpose."

My journey hasn’t always been easy, but every challenge has pushed me to break through my limits and redefine what I thought was possible. Today, I’m proud to be a world-ranked wheelchair racer and an advocate for inclusivity in sport, and I believe that parasport has the power to change lives.

For any young person thinking about getting involved in parasport, my advice is simple: explore your options, connect with programmes that support you or even contact me, and most importantly, believe in yourself. The path might have its ups and downs, but it’s full of opportunities to grow, learn, and become part of a community that’s always there for you. Parasport is about much more than competition—it’s about finding your true potential and embracing the possibilities ahead.

"My journey is proof that with the right support and determination, you can break through barriers and achieve things you never imagined possible."

We are very pleased to share the news from Mobility and Accessibility for Children in Australia Ltd (MACA) that the South Australian Department for Transport and Infrastructure has removed the state’s prohibition on selling non-standard child restraints. This means that families will no longer be required to have their vehicle inspected, which often caused delays to equipment access and costed both families’ and suppliers’ time and money.

Under the new regulations which came into effect on 30 March 2024, families can now use their child’s specialty child restraint (e.g. special purpose car seat/harness) in any vehicle that the child travels in, as long as they have a medical certificate to comply with road rules.

Keep scrolling to read the full media release from MACA.

Removal of unnecessary barrier to transport for SA children with disability

A change to South Australian regulations that comes into effect today will significantly improve access to safe transport and community participation for South Australian children
with disability and their families.

Mobility and Accessibility for Children in Australia Ltd (MACA) welcomes the South Australian Government’s decision to remove unfair and unnecessary barriers following a
review of legislation and processes by the Department for Infrastructure and Transport.

MACA Chief Executive, Helen Lindner, said the change followed three years of advocacy by the not-for-profit organisation – who were deeply concerned the laws were resulting in
children and families travelling unsafely on SA roads.

“Some children with disabilities and medical conditions are unable to travel in ‘off the shelf’ child restraints and require specialised products that are prescribed by an allied health
professional,” Ms Lindner said.

“South Australia was the only state in Australia that required families to undertake a vehicle inspection to use their prescribed speciality child restraint – which they could only do inperson at the Department’s Regency Park office.

“This unnecessary process also had to be repeated if the child travels in multiple vehicles, or the family change their vehicle – which is incredibly difficult for many families, especially those in regional or rural SA.

“This change will significantly improve access to transport for SA children with disabilities and their families.”

Hillbank family Amy and Alan Haythorpe know this all too well. Their 7-year-old son Liam has Autism Spectrum Disorder and would regularly get out of his child restraint and move around the car while they were driving, which was dangerous for Liam and his whole family.

Liam was prescribed a special purpose child restraint by his occupational therapist which Amy and Alan describe as a ‘lifesaver’ – but as they reported in MACA’s ethnographic
research study with Monash University, the inspection and approval process was onerous.

“The inspection is just for my car, so if something happened to my car and I had to put the seat in Alan’s car, we’d get a fine for it,” Amy said.

“A year ago my car needed work and was out of commission for a few months. In that time I used Alan’s car but we couldn’t use Liam’s seat because we didn’t have the approval
certificate. We had to use a normal booster seat and Liam did start acting up, taking his seatbelt off while I was driving.

“It will be a big help to no longer have to get each vehicle inspected and approved to be able to use Liam’s specialised seat.”
The changes to regulations came into effect on 30 March 2024.

While MACA welcomes this change, it acknowledges there is still more work to be done to remove unfair barriers for families.

“Seatbelt buckle covers – often prescribed by an allied health professional when a child with disability or challenging behaviours habitually escapes their child restraint or seatbelt – have not been included in the change,” Ms Lindner said.

“Families still face unnecessary processes to be able to legally use a buckle cover for their child – including an onerous online application and a three week wait for a response.

“We will continue to advocate for change in this area to ensure South Australian children with disability and their families have equal access to safe transport and community
participation.”

ENDS

Media enquiries:
Sarah O’Connor
0423 683 853
sarah@macahub.org

About MACA:
With funding from the Australian Government Department of Social Services, MACA is leading a significant program of work, including research, policy, training, practice, to improve the safety and accessibility of motor vehicle transport for children with disabilities.

This includes a national evidence-informed website of information and resources, training for allied health professionals and organisations who support families, and crash testing and assessing the safety of specialty vehicle restraint systems used by children with disabilities and medical conditions.

As 2023 is drawing to a close, it’s the perfect moment to reflect on the past few months, which has been a whirlwind of both busyness and incredibly gratifying experiences. Balancing the demanding worlds of wheelchair racing, university studies, and community involvement often challenging, yet exhilarating. Their support for my dreams has enabled me to aim high and give back to the disability community, who have been a constant source of strength throughout my athletic and personal journey.

In August I had the honour of addressing a distinguished audience at The Carbine Club of New Zealand Lunch. This event, hosted by a club that has been a vital source of support for disabled athletes, provided me with a platform to share my wheelchair racing journey and my deep passion for sports. It wasn’t merely an opportunity to tell my own story, but also a chance to shine a spotlight on the invaluable support provided by organisations like the Carbine Club and the Sir Dennis Blundell Charitable Trust to individuals with disabilities. These organisations are the unsung heroes, working tirelessly behind the scenes to turn dreams into reality.

In September, I headed to Christchurch, where I took the opportunity to visit the head offices of Medifab and Spex Seating, as one of their ambassadors. This experience offered me a behind-the-scenes look at the remarkable work being done to transform the lives of individuals with disabilities. It was fantastic to tour their facilities and learn more about their innovative seating solutions, as well as to speak with the staff, sharing my sporting achievements and life journey, and how these organisations have helped me.

The Starship Foundation, an integral part of my life, extended an invitation to their Barfoot and Thompson Auckland Marathon Breakfast. Speaking to the audience, sharing my journey, and hearing the inspiring stories of those raising funds for Starship was heartwarming and reaffirmed the incredible impact of community and collective efforts. The Starship Foundation has not only provided exceptional medical care but has always seen me as a person beyond my disability with dreams and goals to live a full, successful and independent life.

My advocacy efforts go beyond simply sharing my personal story; they are about being a catalyst for change. I’m dedicated to ensuring that individuals with disabilities are not just visible but are actively included and provided with opportunities to pursue their dreams. In September, I had the privilege of participating in the Sport New Zealand Disability Hui, representing the Halberg Foundation Youth Council. Together, we discussed the creation of inclusive and equitable opportunities for young disabled individuals in the realms of sports and physical activities, as well as the many barriers that we face in accessing sport. It was a pivotal conversation, and I was honoured to be a part of it.

In addition to my numerous speaking engagements this year, I took a different approach to giving back. With the support of the Halberg Foundation, I organized and hosted a Family Information and Athletics Day last month. The event was designed for young people with disabilities and their families and featured a range of activities, inspirational athletes, personal stories, and valuable information from various providers within the disability community. It wasn’t just an event; it was a real indication of my commitment to creating an inclusive environment where para-athletes and their families could connect, share experiences, and flourish together.

Although I haven’t had the chance to compete on the athletics tracks in the past few months, I’ve been gearing up for the upcoming season with intense training, a renewed focus on nutrition, and mental performance coaching. A couple of weeks ago, I had the opportunity to attend an emerging racers camp in Canberra, led by Australia’s top wheelchair coaches. This experience validated that my journey is on the right path. I’m feeling invigorated and fully prepared for the upcoming season, which promises more international campaigns as I pursue my dream of becoming a world-class wheelchair racer.

Lastly, just last week, I had the honour of attending the annual Auckland University of Technology Blues awards, which recognize top-performing students in sports, arts, culture, and design. It was very special to be acknowledged as one of these students and receive an AUT Blue Sports Award for Athletics – Wheelchair Racing. During the evening, there came a time when they also announced the major award winners, and I was absolutely amazed to hear my name for Male Athlete of the Year. To be awarded such a prestigious honour amongst incredible talent across 20 different sporting codes, was a moment I will cherish forever.

With just three months left in 2023, let’s maintain our forward momentum. Let’s champion inclusion, advocate for change, and celebrate each victory, whether grand or small. Together, we’ve got this! The future holds boundless opportunities to make a difference and leave a lasting impact. The journey continues, and I’m excited to embrace every challenge that lies ahead.
