This weekend some of Sam’s dreams came true when riding in a race car and having a snowball fight could be ticked off his bucket list. Eight-year-old Sam has Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, a muscle-wasting disease which means that due to the severity of his condition, he is now under palliative care.
Sam’s family want to give him as many special moments and build as many memories as they can to make every moment count. Sam has drawn up a small bucket list of things he would like to do while he is still able, which includes having a snowball fight, riding a ferris wheel, a train ride, and seeing some fast cars.
Coordinated by Jared Parker, Sam’s special snow Sunday started when Jared drove Sam up Mt Hutt from the base of the mountain in his rally car, soaking in spectacular views of the Canterbury plains.
Tobogganing and sit-skiing with Joe, Head Instructor from Disabled Snowsports Canterbury, were all part of Sam’s thrilling snow experience on the slopes of Mt Hutt. But the real magic started when it begun to snow right when Sam’s snowball fight with his siblings kicked off!
William from Medifab engineered a special ski-base for Sam’s Zippie Iris wheelchair, to enable him to be manoeuvered about on the snow, and along with Jared’s specially designed snow catapult, meant watching out for Sam when he had a snowball in his hand!
Thanks to Jared Parkers Motorsport, William Mascull from Medifab, Ben Eagle from Spex Seating, Joe Hurrell from Disabled Snowsports Canterbury and Richie Owen from Mt Hutt who all made the experience possible; and thanks to Sam and his family for being a ton of fun to spend the day with!
